What?
One of the first things I had to decide was what size and other mechanical standards I will use.
Since haptics are very important to me (did I say I'm a percussionist?) I chose large panels and 6,35mm (1/4") phone jacks as a starting basis.
Large panels are used in systems like Moog, MOTM, Oakley Sound Systems, synthesizers.com, Technosaurus, Modcan, Cyndustries, PPG, Serge, Buchla, Wiard, Polyfusion, Roland and so on.

Since I could narrow down to the 5U (1U=1,75"/44,45mm) format which is somewhat common (Moog, MOTM, Oakley, synthesizers.com, PPG) I had to look what width would fit my needs.

  Space!
Although I find the layout and look of a vintage system like Moog or PPG very pleasing I went for the MOTM format which is slightly narrower (1U instead of 2,125") and saves me some space (which is important in my small home studio).
If you compare the arrangement of the controls of a - let's say - Moog to a MOTM you'll find some significant differences.
Admittedly I had to get used to the look of a MOTM panel - it took me some time to agree and accept the compromise (I'm well aware that there are people who don't see a compromise there and regard "their" system as the "only solution" - that's perfectly alright and I certainly don't want to initiate another religious war on that topic ;-)

So, the faceplates of my first modular synthesiser will be 5U (222,25mm/8,75") high and multiples of 1U wide.
